Campen Beach Erosion Study & Design
Camp Pendleton, CA

Project Features Scope
  • Engineering Study of Active Beach Erosion
  • Hybrid Solution for Sand Stabilization:
(a)Convention Beach Nourishment   (b)Hi-Tech Pressure Equalization Modules (PEM)
  • Remedial Engineering to Mitigate Beach Erosion at Marine Base

Description

The objective of this project was to study and identify the ongoing beach erosion at Campen Beach at the Marine Corps Base Joseph H. Pendleton and to recommend alternative remedial engineering solutions for profile and alongshore equilibration. Since 2002, when housing construction was completed, the site has experienced severe sand erosion during storms, with deep trenches adjacent to the homes. The beachhead has eroded back approximately 20 ft., and is whitin 10 ft. of the structures.

A combination of factors - including significant rain events, storm surge, wave uprush, wave energy backwash, beach water table, local flooding due to blocked drainage, and sand supply - has produce significant erosion along the shoreline of newly constructed housing at Campen Beach.

A hybrid system, consisting of a combination of the PEM and conventional beach nourishment, was the preferred recommendation for remedial action at Campen Beach. The proposed hybrid system is an engineered solution to the Campen Beach erosion problem which will not only remedy the existing beach morphology, but will also provide a cost-effective and sound alternative to the historic hard stabilization methods such as a perched beach type repair.
